Meet Purple Heart Recipient Patrick Wickens

Purple Heart recipient Patrick Wickens, a Montana native, joined the U.S. Army seeking a better life. Deployed to Iraq in 2003 with the 4-27 Field Artillery, 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Wickens experienced intense combat. On May 14, 2004, he was critically injured by a rocket-propelled grenade, losing his right leg above the knee and sustaining severe injuries to his left leg. His life was saved by quick-acting teammates before he was transported to hospitals in Baghdad, Germany, and finally Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

After multiple surgeries and overcoming significant challenges, Wickens retired in 2006 and moved to Florida where he met his wife and started a family. Despite his disability, he leads an active lifestyle, engaging in cycling, golf, scuba diving, kayaking, and fishing. His adaptive home, provided by Homes for Our Troops, has enhanced his quality of life, offering accessibility features that significantly reduce daily hazards.

Wickens also gives back to the veteran community by volunteering with Fairways for Warriors, an organization that supports wounded combat veterans through golf-related activities. His story is a testament to resilience and community support, illustrating the profound impact of organizations that assist veterans in transitioning back into civilian life.
