75th Anniversary of Flag Day at Mount Vernon Celebrates Service

We the Veterans and Military Families, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering veterans and military families, recently commemorated the 75th anniversary of Flag Day at Mount Vernon, historic home of President George Washington. The assembly honored the American flag and also highlighted the indomitable spirit of America's veterans and military families.

“This is a critical conversation about what it means to be a patriot who participates in your country,” said Ellen Gustafson, Executive Director of We the Veterans and Military Families,

Flag Day at Mount Vernon wasn't just a ceremonial gesture but a vibrant forum for discussing patriotism and civic duty, set against the backdrop of America’s first veteran leader’s home.

The event drew a remarkable roster of veterans, public leaders, and advocates for military families. Notable figures such as Admiral Steve Abbot (USN, Ret.), Deputy Assistant Secretary Zaneta Adams, and others contributed to the panel discussions that ranged from the role of veterans in maintaining trust in public information to finding continued purpose after military service.

One of the standout panels, "Trusted Messengers, Trustworthy Messages," delved into the crucial role veterans and military families play in upholding the trust of their fellow Americans, which is about more than just having access to reliable information—it is also about the ability to critically assess the sources of that information.

Another panel, "Finding Purpose & Continued Service," showcased programs that provide opportunities for veterans and military family members to continue serving their communities. The importance of finding meaning in post-military life was a central theme, underlined by contributions from leaders like Mary Beth Bruggeman of The Mission Continues.

A Day of Reflection and Resolve

The wreath-laying ceremony at President Washington’s Tomb was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served. It was a moment of reflection amid discussions about duty, service, and patriotism. As America faces complex challenges, the insights and experiences of its veterans and military families remain indispensable in fostering a united, resilient society.
